There was a great community turnout for the first ‘Warsop Against Waste’ litter pick at The Carrs nature reserve this week.

Residents arrived on Saturday armed with litter pickers and gloves to begin the clean-up of The Carrs, which has been a target of antisocial behaviour and littering.

After a recent incident where a memorial bench was thrown into the river, followed by graffiti appearing the next day, local resident Phoebe Cox set up the group on Facebook to encourage residents to get together and bring some much-needed pride back into the area.

Phoebe, 21, said: “I’m really happy with the turnout today. We’ve filled 25 bin bags with broken glass, bottles, lighters and food wrappers.

People have come from as far as Grantham to take part and it was lovely to see Councillor Sonya Ward helping out too.

“I’m going to schedule the next litter pick in February so we can work on different areas of Warsop, so if anyone has areas they are concerned about, please contact me on the group page and let me know.”

As your local community reporter I felt it was only right I got stuck in too, but lets just say I discovered my wellies were not waterproof, while knee-deep in the River Meden retrieving discarded traffic cones!

Nobody can question my dedication.

A big thank you to Ken from Della’s Mobile Catering for providing much-needed hot drinks to the litter pickers – he is based at The Carrs every day.
