First car cruisers fall foul of police clampdown

Nottinghamshire Police have issued the first Fixed Penalty Notice for breaching the car cruising Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to prevent car cruising on Junction 27 of the M1 and the A611 bypass..

The PSPO prohibits people from engaging in, encouraging or assisting in the carrying out of any ‘car cruising’ events on the public highway, and other land to which the public has access.

On the evening of Sunday May 13 officers from Ashfield Neighbourhood Policing Team patrolled Junction 27 of the M1 and issued the First Fixed Penalty notice for breaching the Public Spaces Protection order that came into force on May 4. Police say there were more than 30 vehicles congregating at J27 appearing to watch vehicles race along the dual carriageway part. One of the vehicles involved was stopped and the driver was given a FPN for breaching the PSPO.

Sgt Carl Holland who leads the Policing Operation said “The PSPO signage is all round the Junction stating that Car Cruising is not to be tolerated and is now illegal. Any breaching the PSPO can be liable to a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 or prosecution. Car Cruising is dangerous, anti-social and put lives at risk as this is a busy junction of the motorway and business park.”
