Fire at Sutton factory Meridian Lightweight Technologies

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service said the incident at 11.30am involved a a single-storey building measuring 15 by 30 metres, used as a manufacturer of various electrical and mechanical presses.

Crews from Mansfield, Alfreton and Ashfield attended on February 14.

Watch manager at Ashfield Fire Station, John Howard, said: "The fire involved small machinery and two fire engines attended and 14 Firefighters."

The brigade used six breathing apparatus and dry powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers to tackle the flames and it is said that no-one was injured.

Mr Howard added: "The fire did some minor damage to the machinery. The company has very good fire procedures and ambulance service attended as a precaution."

The stop message was received at 13.15pm.

A spokeswoman for Meridian Lightweight Techonolgies gave a timeline of the incident.

Regional Director, HR director Sarah Britton said: "At approximately 11:15 a small fire broke out on top of one of our die cast production cells. A small hot piece of magnesium had projected from the mould onto some electrical wiring above the equipment, causing a small fire. Our ERT personnel tackled the fire but owing to the density of the smoke given off by oil and electrical cables and reduced visibility, the decision was taken to call for support from the emergency services. There were no injuries to any of our employees nor any damage to the equipment, which will run later today.

"Our die cast employees have all been trained at the Moreton-in- Marsh Fire Service College and are competent to fight small occurrences such as this one. We are extremely proud of how the team handled themselves today and confident they could have completed the incident unaided, but we will never take chances where their safety is concerned. The Emergency Services were on hand with their specialist equipment and the fire was dealt with very quickly. We would like to thank both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue teams who were in attendance today."
