Fire and rescue crews were called to assist at 24 crashes in the county between 1st and 18th December, 17 of which required casualties to be cut free. In two of those incidents three people died and many more have been injured, some seriously.

Although the exact cause of each of these incidents is still under investigation, fire bosses have said that low light, wet and slippery roads and distractions such as mobile phones are all factors that can lead to incidents such as collisions or vehicles leaving the road at this time of the year.

Area manager, Keith Jones, said: “Our thoughts go out to all those people who have been affected by incidents on our roads, particularly in the last month, but also throughout the whole of 2014.”

“Incidents such as these are always distressing, but it is particularly upsetting when they happen so close to Christmas, a time when families and loved ones should be together. The weather can impact dramatically on road conditions.”
