The West Room and Upper Hall of St Mary’s Church was a hive of activity and bargain hunters who turned out in force weren’t disappointed as a variety of stalls did brisk business.

Father Andy Nicolls, the church’s vicar, heaped praise on St Mary’s fund-raising team. He said: “Their hard work and dedication plays an integral role in keeping our church at the forefront of the community. It has been wonderful to see so many people supporting us again.”

Nearly new clothing , jams and preserves, books, cakes , bric-a-brac, toys, jewellery, and toiletries were just a few of the delights on offer.

The kitchen team made up of Joyce White, Zoe Jackson, Helen Dexter and Caroline Turner, worked wonders to accommodate scores of customers. A 20-prize ‘Big Raffle’, a ‘Lot of Bottle’ initiative run by Paula and Kerry Palmer, Robert and Jillian Naylor’s ‘Xmas Arcade’ and Eleanor Lang and her guide members’ ‘Super Stalls’ contributed to the fun.

But it was the presence of Santa, otherwise known as Martin Walton, sitting in his grotto accompanied by the Christmas Elf, played by Emma Swaby, who attracted the greatest interest from eager children who queued to see the great man.
