The two events – highlights in this year’s festival calendar – were enjoyed by families across Eastwood and Kimberley.

The garden party took place at Coronation Park on Saturday afternoon and included drama, music, arts and crafts and ‘walk about’ entertaining acts. There was BMX biking, games, storytelling and a playbus all on offer at the park completely free of charge.

The beer festival, hosted at Beauvale Priory, attracted real ale fans from across the area.

It was the sixth beer festival the priory owners have hosted.

Unique and unusual ales such as ‘Apricot Jungle’ were on hand to try as people turned up at Beauvale Abbey Farm in Moorgreen, where the old priory ruins lay.

The new DH Lawrence Festival of Culture – a combination of the DH Lawrence Festival and the Eastwood Arts Festival – was officially launched last Thursday.

The Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Susan Bagshaw – also an Eastwood town councillor – opened the festival at the Lawrence Heritage Centre in Mansfield Road.

At the event, guests were welcomed by Dr Andrew Harrison, Director of the DH Lawrence Research Centre and the Mayor awarded prizes to this year’s poetry competition winners, Myrian Pooley and Patricia Batstone.

From guided walks, reading groups and a shop-window competition to free open days, special offers and open mic nights, the diverse festival programme includes over 40 events and will run until September 19, where a finale theatre production by pupils at Hall Park Academy in Eastwood will take place at the Lakeside Arts Centre.

Other festival highlights include the Brinsley Headstocks Festival this Sunday, September 6, between 11am and 5pm.
