Father and son in court over Mansfield pub worker attack

Patrick Preston (20) and Peter Patrick Preston (51) of Layton Avenue, Mansfield, admitted assaulting the worker outside the Stag and Pheasant pub on Clumber Street last month.

CCTV footage of the attack was shown at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.

The court was told how the pair, along with a third man, had caught the attention of staff in the pub for acting ‘childish’ and pulling faces.

When they left, it was thought they had taken something from a display, and were challenged on the street as they tried to leave.

After a short conversation, the footage showed the member of staff turning his back and talking into a radio.

Patrick then ran up and jumped on him, getting him in a headlock and wrestling him to the floor.

Peter Preston is then shown grabbing the radio from his hand and throwing it into the street. No reason was given for the attack when questioned by police.

Defending, Yvonne Wragg, said no punches or kicks were thrown but both were remorseful for the attack.

She said Peter Preston had grabbed the radio because he thought it was going to be used to attack his son.

Peter was given a £110 fine and told to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Patrick was given a 16-week curfew which forbids him to be out of his home between 7pm and 7am each Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

He was told to pay £295, including £150 compensation to his victim, who suffered a twisted knee in the attack.

The magistrates said he ‘played a leading role’ with the victim being attacked from behind.
