Abbie’s Team have launched their fundraising appeal for 2014 and are asking Hucknall residents and businesses to show their support once more.

This is the fourth year running that Hucknall’s Wendy Sims, together with friends, family, neighbours and former colleagues, have embarked on a fundraising feat for the ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ charity.

To date they have collected £22,ooo for this worthy cause and other charities by climbing mountains, running races and holding events - and this year is no exception.

It was after the charity made her own daughter’s dream come true, after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged seven, that Mandy began helping the fund.

“Our youngest daughter Abbie (now 18) had her dream fulfilled when this amazing charity arranged for her to meet McFly,” explained Mandy, of Penhale Drive.

“Once again we are set to embark on another year of gruelling challenges in the hope of raising enough money for a very sick child and their mum, dad or guardian to visit Santa at his Lapland home this Christmas.”

The challenges this year will see Mandy take part in the London Marathon in April, and on Sunday 24th August, Abbie’s Team will be walking the Monsal Trail in the Peak District, starting at Bakewell ending in Buxton and then returning. And on 7th September Mandy will pull on her running shoes again to take part in the Great North Run dressed as a ‘star’ - the logo of ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’.

“I started my training for London on Christmas Eve and so far it is going ok,” said Mandy. “Abbie has set up my ipod with lots of uplifting music.”

Abbie’s grandparents, Anne and Bob Tierney will also be donating money in lieu of gifts from a party they are holding to celebrate their 70 th birthdays and their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

“Every year we have managed to not only reach but to exceed our target thanks to the amazing support and generosity of Hucknall people,” added Mandy. “We would love to get that support again and if any businesses would like to sponsor or offer raffle prizes or adopt our cause, please get in touch.”
