The court heard that the assault happened after Mr Sykes pushed Mr Shaw’s girlfriend.

Mr Shaw has no previous convictions and was in drink at the time. The party spilled out into the street, the police were called and Mr Shaw was arrested.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order and ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay a criminal courts charge of £150, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £60.

No compensation was ordered as the family have decided to put the matter behind them.
