Family crochet poppies for Remembrance Day

To some, the skill of crocheting may be a little old-fashioned, but for one Hucknall family it is an art that has been passed through the generations.

It was the grandfather of Ruth Upson who taught her mum how to be creative through crocheting, who then shared the skill with her grandaughter but it has now become a little cottage industry in the Upson family home.

And the family have put their skills to good use by crocheting red poppies which they sell in the lead up to Remembrance Day to fundraise for the Royal British Legion.

“I think it’s important for children to learn about the different wars and not take things for granted so this has been a great way of highlighting the cause and raising money for a worthy organisation,” explained Ruth of Corinthean Close, whose two daughters Charlotte (12) and Ellena (10), have joined in the fun.

“We first decided to make the poppies three years ago and sold them to family and friends and raised £180. But last year we managed to raise the total to £340 by mentioning what we were doing on Facebook and the orders flooded in.

“We are hoping to double last year’s total and we are all busy crocheting in the evening as we sit watching the TV.”

The family poppies are making their way around the country now as Ruth’s cousin, who is based in London, is selling them to her colleagues and friends and demand for the crafty creations is growing.

“We have a little production line going now with some of us crocheting and others sewing on the buttons and attaching the safety pins”

The family are now appealing for donations of materials to help them boost funds further.

“We have asked many high street retailers to donate some materials to help us continue but our appeals haven’t been very fruitful,” added Ruth. “But if anyone can donate red wool, black buttons and safety pins we will be very grateful.”
