Warning to anglers after spate of injured cygnets found in discarded fishing line
A Warsop wildlife rescue team who saved a number of cygnets tangled in discarded fishing line are reminding anglers to take extra care and follow the rules.
Volunteers from Warsop Wildlife Rescue rescued and rehomed the injured cygnets found at The Carrs Local Nature Reserve at a swan sanctuary and are now taking action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

A spokesman from Warsop Wildlife Rescue said: “We're not looking to stop people enjoying fishing but we do ask everyone to please follow the rules and take extra care with their tackle.
“Lost or discarded fishing line, hooks and lures can cause horrific injuries to wildlife as we've sadly seen with our little cygnet. Thankfully this one was rescued and safely returned to its family but not every animal is so lucky.
“Please take all your tackle home with you and dispose of it responsibly. A few extra seconds to clear up could save an animal from a lot of pain and suffering.
“Let's all do our bit to keep The Carrs a safe place for both people and wildlife.”
The group is reminding residents to stick to the fishing rules displayed on Mansfield District Council's sign at the mill dam including fishing from dawn until dusk only, no keep nets and barbless hooks only.
The team at Warsop Wildlife Rescue say there has been a sharp increase in call outs to assist injured animals caught in discarded line.
After making the heartbreaking discoveries volunteers appealed for stronger laws around fishing, the disposal of tackle and the sale of fishing equipment.
A spokesman from Warsop Wildlife Rescue added: “Behind every piece of abandoned tackle is the very real possibility of an animal suffering a slow, painful death.
“Birds can become caught around their wings, legs and feet. Hooks can become embedded in their mouths, throats or bodies. Line can cause horrific injuries, strangulation and entanglement. And it isn’t only wildlife at risk! discarded hooks and line can also pose a serious danger to people and pets using our waterways.
“We need stronger laws around fishing, the disposal of tackle and the sale of fishing equipment.”
