Met Office issues thunderstorm warning across Nottinghamshire on hottest day of the year

Despite temperatures soaring to a sweltering 34ºC across the region, the Met Office has warned there could be thunderstorms and flooding from 4pm this afternoon up until midnight.

Meteorologists have advised people to be aware of travel disruption which is likely to be caused by the isolated thunderstorms, as heavy rain is expected to break out during the late afternoon and evening.

Lightning and gusty winds are also forecast during the eight hour weather warning.

Some places in Nottinghamshire could even experience hail and as much as 15-20 mm of rain is likely to fall in less than an hour in Eastern England.

The Met Office has said there could be damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes, and that short term loss of power in affected areas is ‘likely’.

Train services may also be delayed and houses and businesses could become flooded during the thunderstorms, leading to structural damage.

Motorists are also warned of delays and urged to take extra care while on the road this evening, as conditions are likely to be affected by spray, standing water.

Drivers should allow for extra time for travelling between the affected hours of 4pm and midnight, when thunderstorms are forecast to hit.

The weather warning also applies to Rutland, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, where short bursts of heavy rain and lightning are predicted.
