Man fined over bogus waste collection

Antony Hume, 26, of Egmanton Road, Meden Vale, was slapped with more than £350 of court costs after he admitted to a duty of care offence at Mansfield Magistrates Court last week.

Hume’s rubbish was found on a service road off Netherfield Lane, Meden Vale, when the council decided to launch an investigation.

Enquiries revealed that Hume had been clearing out his garden and had given the rubbish to a ‘scrap collector’ to get rid of.

But he failed to check that the ‘scrap collector’ had a waste carrier’s licence and they dumped his rubbish - leaving him in breach of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

He was ordered to pay a £100 fine, legal costs of £361.84 and a victim surcharge of £20.

Councillor Mick Barton, portfolio holder for public protection at Mansfield District Council, said: “This case demonstrates how everyone has a statutory responsibility to ensure that anyone removing waste from their property is licensed to do so.

“Fly-tipping is a significant problem in the Mansfield district and we will always seek to take legal action where possible.

“Residents should check the waste disposer holds a waste carrier’s licence and obtain a receipt, which includes the contact number and address for them.”
