A spokesperson for the service said crews from Eastwood, Stockhill, London Road, Highfields and Arnold were sent to the scene.

Talbot Street has been closed off by emergency services and residents have been advised to avoid the area while firefighters deal with the blaze.

A cordon has been set up at the junction of Clarendon Street and Talbot Street.

The venue's owner George Akins told reporters: "No one is inside, everyone has been evacuated - we will wait to make sure we are all safe before we open tonight.

"Everything is fine, I’m sure it’s all fine. It’s nothing major, and compliments to the fire brigade."

The venue has become one of the UK's most well-known live music venues hosting legendary acts over the years from Nirvana to David Bowie.
