Author of the ‘TimeRiders’ book series, Alex Scarrow, visited Samworth Church Academy to inspire students to read more and get creative with their writing skills and storytelling.
The popular author has written five thrillers, nine ‘TimeRiders’ books and four ‘Ellie Quin’ series books and has also worked on six computer games and several screenplays.
Before this he was a guitarist in a rock band for 10 years.
During the day, Alex gave a presentation about books and writing, and led workshops which have equipped students with the tools to think creatively.
He also played ‘steal and twist’ with students, which is a Hollywood film writing technique of taking a known idea and giving it a substantial change to create a new spin on the story.
Such was his popularity that long queues of students formed in the library to get books signed by the author during break times.
Alex said: “I like going into schools because it’s the only chance a writer gets to connect with his audience; in the same way that musicians love to gig.”
Leanne Wain, librarian at the Academy added: “The students’ response to the Alex’s visit has been brilliant and I’m pleased they enjoyed it so much.
“They really seemed interested in his stories and in his life before he became an author.
“I’ve had great feedback and all of Alex’s books have big waiting lists in the library now.
“I’ve already had lots of suggestions from pupils about who to invite into school next!”
