Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero has joined forces with West Nottinghamshire College to launch a new work experience scheme.

It offers youngsters from the area the chance to spend 15 days in the MP’s busy constituency office as part of their A-Level and NVQ Level 3 courses.

The work experience initiative is open to all students at the college who live in the constituency.

Harneath Dosanjh (17), of Kirkby, will become the first student to take part in the new scheme which will work around her timetable over the next few months.

She said; “I am really looking forward to the experience and cannot wait to get started now.

“It is a great opportunity and I know some of the things I am going to learn while I am with Gloria are really going to help me later on in my career.”

Ms De Piero said; “I am a firm believer in giving young people a chance in life.

“This is my way of helping youngsters from Ashfield get a foot in the door and pick up some really valuable skills along the way.

“The only thing I am interested in is talent and hard work. Politics is for everyone and not just a select few people.”

Marie Stacey, academic studies programme area leader, said: “Harneath is a real go-getter who leapt at the chance to develop her skills through this fantastic work placement scheme.

“We are very grateful to Gloria for this wonderful opportunity, which will enable students to learn more about the work that MPs do.

“Opportunities like this do not come around very often, so it is a great way of inspiring students to work as hard as they can and achieve their full potential.”

Students who take part in the work experience scheme will learn about casework and administrative tasks, dealing with daily requests from stakeholders and organisations, policy issues, helping to manage the diary and accompanying the MP on her weekly visits.
