Duke’s Gold Award for proud Andrew

Andrew worked tirelessly through the five sections of the award which included volunteering at a hospice and two on-foot expeditions in Wales.

The hardworking youngster achieved the accolade while studying and working at the same time.

Andrew said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has given me confidence, which is something I lacked before starting and I have found this to be very helpful.

“It has also taught me so much about what I am capable of and I have learnt new skills that I have taken with me and apply at work and at home.

“I have also met new people and have been fortunate to have shared memories with them.”

Other categories meant playing tennis for the physical section and learning to drive for the skill section.

“Part of my Gold award consisted of tennis,” said Andrew. “I still carry on with the tennis and am enjoying learning how to improve my performance as well as my game.

“I really enjoyed volunteering with St Raphael’s Hospice as it gave me the opportunity to meet new people and work to make a difference to others’ lives and chat to and assist customers.

“And it was great just helping out - whether sorting through donations or helping people carrying objects to and from their cars.

“I chose St Raphael’s Hospice was because they helped my grandmother care for my grandad so I returned the favour.”
