A court heard that 19-year-old Grzegorz Jarzebowski dropped off his friend and girlfriend in a lay-by on Sandy Lane in Worksop after fears he was driving too fast, but hit his friend as he drove back along the same road minutes later.

Jarzebowski, of Gateford Road, admitted failing to stop after a road accident, driving while over the alcohol limit and without insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court heard that Jarzebowski had been drinking with his girlfriend, his father and his friend Marek Rydz in the early hours of January 18, in Worksop, when he made the decision to drive to a nearby petrol station.

Ruth Snoddin, prosecuting, said: “The defendant’s girlfriend stood in front of the car on the drive. The defendant told her to get into the vehicle and eventually she relented.

“During the drive she had to keep telling him to slow down as he was driving too fast.

“Eventually he stopped the car in a lay by and allowed his girlfriend and Mr Rydz to get out before he drove off along Sandy Lane.

“They began walking home but Mr Rydz kept walking in the road. She tried to pull him on to the footpath.

“He was struck by a car causing him to fly into the air and knocking him unconscious. The car didn’t stop.”

The court heard the defendant’s girlfriend flagged down the next car, which was an unmarked police car and an ambulance was called at 4.30am.

The court heard he had been driving his mother’s car without her permission, and he was arrested beside the vehicle which had a damaged windscreen. A breath test revealed he had 88 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes

Jarzebowski told police at Newark: “I was driving. I did not see him and I killed him.”

The court heard that Jarzebowski panicked and went home, where he drank three glasses of vodka.

He returned to the scene, saw the ambulance and police cars, went home and finished the vodka ‘in a single gulp’.

Ms Snoddin said: “Marek was knocked unconscious but came around and suffered nothing more than bruising which is very fortunate under the circumstances.”

David Verity, mitigating, said: “He does show extreme remorse for his actions. Marek is a good friend and there are no hard feelings between the two of them.”

Magistrates sentenced him to 26 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to carry out 280 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £165 in fines and costs and was banned from driving for 18 months.
