Robert Carr, prosecuting, said: “On May 12, two officers were on duty on wasteland behind the B&Q in Worksop.

“Mr Hart was carrying two incinerator bins. He said ‘Good evening’ to them and said he had just found them.”

The officers checked CCTV and saw that Hart had taken the bins, worth £42.

The court heard he had been released from prison in February after serving a sentence for theft.

Chris Perry, mitigating, said: “On the positive side of things he is not a violent or a dangerous offender.

“Opiates are the problem. The constant stealing and low-level crime is to fund that addiction.

“He’s not a young man any more but he can still turn his life around. He’s not wasting the court’s time and money.

“He deserves some real credit.”

Magistrates sentenced Hart, who appeared via videolink from HMP Nottingham, to 12 weeks in prison.

After his release he will be placed on a 12 month supervision order. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115.
