Drone may feature at Abbey festival

The committee which organises the annual Byron Festival is looking into the possibility of a drone being used during an event at Newstead Abbey.

The suggestion has come from Dave Arnold, chairman of the Hucknall-based Blue Boar Scooter Club.

At a meeting of the committee, it was reported that Dave went to see a drone, an unmanned aircraft, flying over an event and taking photos.

He thought it would be ‘brilliant’ if a drone could be used for an assembly of scooters, classic cars and VW camper vans at the Abbey on Sunday June 29.

A request has been made for the committee and the club to pay half each towards the £300 cost of hiring a drone, which could be offset by the sale of aerial photos taken.

The committee deferred their decision to find out if special permission would be needed for flying the drone.

The festival will take place from Saturday 28th June until Sunday 6th July and Newstead Abbey will also be the scene of a Byron celebration on the final day.

Family-oriented entertainment will be provided by Mansfield Male Voice Choir, Newstead Brass Band and the Ellenismos Greek Dance Team.
