A car dealer has been sentenced for drink driving the morning after a boozy night out.

Lewis Phillip Edward Shaw of Slant Lane, Shirebrook, was caught over the legal limit by police the morning after drinking.

The 32-year-old appeared before Mansfield Magistrates’ Court charged with driving above the legal limit.

He measured 52 mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath - where 35mcgs is the legal limit.

Shaw pleaded guilty to the offence.

In mitigation, Harry Bevan said this is everyone’s worst nightmare.

He said his marriage had recently broken down and his partner had left the marital home.

Mr Bevan also told magistrates that a ban would mean Shaw may lose his job at the VW dealership he worked - which involved himself giving customers test drives. It also involved a 34-mile round trip which he drives to get to work.

He added: “Marital difficulties ensued and they recently separated. That hit Lewis quite hard and as a result brought about the day in question.

“This isn’t the case he purposely drank and intentionally got into his car to drive.

“This was 8.30am in the morning and this is everyone’s worst nightmare.”

Shaw was caught by police driving along Bothamsall on the 8th March.

He was driving a Volkswagen Tiguan on the A614.

Mr Bevan added: “He is an honest and intelligent individual and has been open and up front about the situation. This is a one off thing and is out of character.”

Magistrates fined Shaw £250, and ordered to pay costs of £85 and victim surcharge of £25. He was also disqualified for 12 months.
