A drink driver who had no insurance tried to escape from police in Worksop before he abandoned his car, a court has heard.

Jonathan McLauchlan, 20, of the Crescent, Dinnington, admitted both offences at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said police spotted his VW Golf at 7.25pm on May 6, on Lincoln Street, and chased it ‘at speed’ to Melrose Walk where it was abandoned.

McLauchlan was arrested at his relative’s house. He told police he had drunk a full bottle of Jaegermeister. A roadside test revealed he had 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Simon Greaves, mitigating, said McLauchlan had been told to move his car and had been driving it a short distance to a friend’s drive.

The court heard he had a clean licence and no previous convictions.

He was fined £120, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85, and was banned for 16 months.
