Dr D'Mello's farewell to Hucknall

Kevin D’Mello, who retired from the Whyburn Practice on Thursday with a goodbye party, was the last of four members of the same family to have been a GP in Hucknall.

Dr D’Mello, 60, said: “The party was a great success and it was so fantastic to see so many familiar faces who wished to come by and give me a hug or a kiss or a handshake and all to wish me well for the future.

“They were so fantastic and I will miss the people immensely. The staff also did a sterling job with providing the tea and cakes. The home baking was thanks to Hazel Simms, Sue’s mum.

“I felt a little overwhelmed by the enormous affection they had shown me. I move to Norwich to start a new adventure but will be back regularly as my Dad still lives here, and does not plan to leave.

“I also feel that I have so many friends in Hucknall and would miss them if I did not see them from time to time.”

Dr D’Mello followed his father, mother and sister at the Curtis Street practice from August 1982.

County councillor John Wilmotsaid: “Dr D’Mello’s father Benedict was at the party and was overwhelmed by the generosity shown by his son’s patients. Many people said he will be hard to replace and they will miss him greatly.”
