A brave Kirkby mum has been awarded in remembrance of her son who died from Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome.

Suzanne Morton was one of eight families to receive an award on behalf of loved ones at the Nottinghamshire organ donor awards on 18th November.

Since she lost her son in February this year, Mrs Morton has been fund raising to support students to go to university.

Her 20-year-old son, Luke, died of Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome prompting her to set the bursary up for students attending his university.

She said: “After Luke’s death I decided to set up a bursary fund at the university he went to to try and help support other students that are financially struggling.

“My aim is to raise £10,500 by Luke’s anniversary in February 2014.

“Already through the generous help and support of many people we have raised £8,400.”

Families attended the awards held at County Hall in West Bridgford in recognition of their loved ones whose deaths saved lives and gave hope through organ donation.

The new award has been created by the Order of St John alongside NHS Blood and Transplant.

Families were presented with their awards by chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council councillor John Allin.
