Diversions will cause accident in one way street

Cars are following diversion signs up Duke Street and then turning right and entering the one-way section of Beardall Street instead of following the signs down King Edward Street.

The diversions were put in place by Western Power Distribution (WPD) as it lays an 33,000 volt electricity cable and now Nottingham County Council (NCC) say they have urgently contacted the company to stress their signing needs to be clearer.

Sally Cresswell, director of Notttingham Printing Ltd, said: “There is going to be a head-on collision. It’s so dangerous it’s ridiculous.

“The roadwork diversions are causing people to make dangerous decisions while driving.

“I am extremely worried that there will be a serious accident. I just hope nobody gets hurt.

“This road has always been a hazard. Since working here, I myself have had several near misses with cars and bikes travelling down this road the wrong way.

“On average we would normally get five cars a week travelling the wrong way but since the diversion I would say there have been a minimum of 30 a day.

“Yesterday there were two trent barton buses went down our road the wrong way full of passengers.”

Over the past week Sally has personally witnessed one motorist who, realising she was in the wrong, performed an ‘incredibly dangerous’ U-turn.

She saw three cars driving down the wrong way within ‘a matter of seconds.’

She added: “The things that happen are amazing. We have told our drivers and couriers about the problem and advised them to be careful when they leave the yard. The road system is very confusing for people who don’t know the area.”

Sally (38), who lives in Hucknall, said the problem lies with the ‘terrible’ signage.

The northbound diversion has been in place for the duration of the works which started 26th July with a road closure on Annesley Road.

A spokesman for NCC said: “The closed section of High Street between Watnall Road and Station Road will be completed by 24th November.”

A spokesman for WPD said: “We have now put plans in place to get additional signage so that drivers are better informed of the diversionary route.”
