DH Lawrence centre set to close

Eastwood was dealt a hammer blow this week after councillors rubber-stamped proposals to close the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre.

Speculation over the centre’s future have been mounting for weeks and the decision was finally taken by Broxtowe Borough Council during Tuesday’s cabinet meeting to bring the curtain down on the 24-year-old centre.

The council says the centre will remain open until the end of March next year, and options are being considered for the future of the building.

But the move has been met with a tide of criticism, including Eastwood MP Gloria De Piero, who accused the council of ignoring public opinion and vowed not to take it ‘lying down until we’ve exhausted every avenue possible’.

Hundreds have even signed a petition in recent weeks support for the centre.
The council reacted by saying the difficult decision was taken as part of a £3m funding gap they need to bridge over the next three years.
