DERBYSHIRE: Remembrance ceremonies to honour our heroes

Ceremonies, supported by local authorities and the Royal British Legion, will be held at dozens of locations during Remembrance Sunday, November 10, with a list on the Derbyshire Times’ website www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk.

A Remembrance service takes place at St Mary and All Saints’ Crooked Spire Church, Chesterfield, at 2.30pm, with a parade through the town along Knifesmithgate about 3pm and a service and wreath-laying at the war memorial, off Rose Hill.

Chesterfield Borough Cllr Graham King said: “Remembrance is a solemn occasion where we are able to come together and remember those who lost their lives in the service of their country.”

Services are planned to take place at war memorials at Staveley, Brimington, Hasland and Newbold on Remembrance Sunday.

On Armistice Day, November 11, there will be a service led by the Royal British Legion at 11am, at the Rose Hill memorial.

Matlock is hosting events from 11am, on Sunday, at Pic Tor war memorial, the town’s Starkholmes war memorial service at 11.20am and Hall Leys Park Head at 3pm. A service will be held at the Park Head, Matlock, from 11am on Monday.

People can go to Alfreton House, on Rodgers Lane, Alfreton, at 10.15am, Sunday, for a march to King Street memorial with a two minutes’ silence at 11am and a service at St Martin’s Church and refreshments at Alfreton House.

Palterton Primary School is recognising Armistice Day with a ceremony on Friday, November 8, in the village.

Pupils will walk from the school following a standard bearer down Back Lane and to Main Street.

This will be followed by a short service outside the village mission before a silence from 11am.

Those wishing to join in can meet in the school playground from 10.15am or can meet at the Cenotaph at 10.30am for the service.

A school spokesman said: “We believe it is important for the children to acknowledge this special day. Let’s stand shoulder to shoulder as a community to remember.”

Remembrance events for the region are scheduled below:

Clay Cross Remembrance Day parade and Remembrance service will be held on Sunday 10 November. The parade will meet at the former cooperative car park on Market Street at 9.30am, marching at 9.45am to St Bartholomew’s Church, on High Street, for the Remembrance service, which will include the laying of wreaths on the war memorial.

Matlock’s Remembrance Sunday and Remembrance Day on Sunday 10 November, includes Pic Tor war memorial service will begin at 11am. The Starkholmes war memorial service is at 11.20am and Hall Leys Park Head at 3pm. A short informal service will be held at the Park Head, Matlock at 11am on Monday 11th of November with two minutes remembrance silence and prayers.

Matlock Bath’s Remembrance service will be held on Sunday 10th November. The service will be lead by David Green and music will be provided by the BM & W training band. A wreath will be laid by the parish council on behalf of the village and children from Holy Trinity School will lay a wreath on behalf of the children of the village.

Brimington’s Remembrance parade will congregate at the Eastwood Park Station road at 1.30pm and leave at 1.45pm promptly on Sunday 10th November. The parade will march from Eastwood Park along Station Road to St Michael’s and All Angel’s Church where the service will be held. After the service, the parade will continue to Church Street to Broom Gardens’ memorial gates where there will be a short service and wreaths laid. After the service, the parade will march to the green. Refreshments will be available after in the church hall.

Bakewell’s Remembrance Day Parade will be held in the town on Sunday 10 November. The event is organised and led by the Bakewell branch of the Royal British Legion. Intermittent road closures will be in force throughout Bakewell and the central car park in the Market Place will be closed to the public from 7am until the conclusion of the parade.

Dronfield’s Remembrance Day Parade will be on Sunday 10 November and begin at 10.30am on School Lane marching to the Dronfield monument in the library gardens. The service will begin at 10.56am with two minutes’ silence at 11am.

Eckington’s Remembrance service will be held in the newly refurbished Eckington Parish church hall, Church street at Sunday 10 November. The service will begin at 10am and will be followed by two minutes silence at 11am.

Staveley’s Remembrance Day parade will be on Sunday 10 November, gathering at 10.15am on St John’s road and marching off at 10.25am towards Staveley Market Place and will reach the Garden of Remembrance at 10:50 at which the service will begin.

Bolsover’s Remembrance Day parade will meet at 10.20am and set off at 10.30am on Sunday 10 November. The parade will march through the town to the church for the Remembrance Day service at about 10.40am. The parade will continue from the church to the war monument in the Market place to lay wreaths.

Ripley’s Remembrance Day parade and service will be on November 10 2013. The parade will leave at 10.15am prompt from the Co-operative car park, Derby Road, marching to All Saints’ Church. There will be a service outside the church where wreaths will be laid and after two minutes’ silence at 11am. There will be a service inside the church. The parade will march down to the Market Place.
