Derbyshire learners honoured during ceremony to mark Adult Learner’s Week

Derbyshire County Council’s Adult Community Education Service gave out awards as part of Adult Learner’s Week.

Learners from across the county had been nominated and their stories showed that by joining a local class they had since improved their career prospects or made a difference to their local community. Many had overcome health problems or conquered a fear of learning in order to gain new qualifications and skills.

Coun Kevin Gillott, who presented the awards, said: “The people nominated for these awards are an inspiration and I greatly admire their achievements.

“Many of them have had jobs and families before deciding to give education another go and I am delighted that this has brought them success.

“Why not find out more about the courses available and consider what’s on offer and if it could help you personally or professionally”.

Awards were given in eight categories including ‘how learning has helped a person to move on, or into, work’ and ‘how learning has been used to overcome personal challenges in people’s lives’. Also acknowledged were the tutor, support staff, volunteer and young learner of 2014 and the county council’s star apprentice.

The awards ceremony included displays showing the range of courses on offer from craft demonstrations, to learning maths on an iPad and family learning.

The Adult Community Education Service offers courses throughout the county all year round. There are daytime and evening classes.
