Derbyshire children’s services hailed in report

The county council is one of nine authorities hailed for its effective leadership of children’s services, called Joining the Dots.

The document – published alongside Ofsted’s second annual social care report – highlights open, honest and collaborative working and states leadership style is a “critical factor” in authorities which do well.

Leaders, including directors, service managers, chief executives and elected members, have clear expectations for staff, are highly visible and set high standards.

They are supportive and challenging with an acknowledgement of risk, clear accountability and a “firm grip” on frontline practices, according to the report.

The county council was chosen to take part in the detailed research after its services for children and young people were rated good following an inspection.

Councillor Kevin Gillott, the county council’s cabinet member for children and younger adults, said: “This report reflects the hard work and commitment of our senior management team and staff to ensure all Derbyshire’s youngsters get the chance to achieve their full potential.

“We have set the bar high but we are certainly not complacent.

“We want the best for all our children and will continue to do everything we can to keep them safe.

“Our staff are doing a difficult job in challenging times as we face our biggest ever budget cuts.”
