Businesses and organisations are being encouraged to sign up to Derbyshire County Council’s ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ award.

Breastfeeding-friendly businesses which welcome mums who breastfeed can apply for the award.

The scheme is free to join and will be rolled out across Derbyshire by April 2015.

There is a set of criteria that businesses need to meet, such as providing a comfortable place for women to feed their babies and ensuring staff are aware of the organisation’s award.

Coun Dave Allen, Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for health and communities, said: “We know that breastfeeding gives children the best possible start in life and also has great benefits for mums too.

“Mums need to feel confident that there are comfortable, friendly places where they can feed their children. It’s important that any barriers to breastfeeding are broken down.

“The Breastfeeding Welcome Here award is all part of changing attitudes to breastfeeding in public”.

As well as championing breastfeeding the county council, in partnership with Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, has achieved the highest possible recognition with UNICEF’s Baby-Friendly Stage 3 accreditation for the quality of support and information given to new mums to enable them to breastfeed and the welcoming standards in their premises.

All new breastfeeding mums can get support from a breastfeeding support worker. The workers are all mums who have breastfed themselves and have been trained to mentor and guide new mums through the early stages of breastfeeding. Mothers-to-be should ask their midwife about the service.
