Delays announced for some same-sex unions

Only same sex couples who are not in a civil partnership will be able to take advantage of gay marriage legislation from 29th March.

The Government is working on adapting laws to allow couples in a civil partnership to convert their union into a marriage if they wish, but will now have to wait until later this year.

So far Nottinghamshire County Council has seven bookings for same sex marriage ceremonies and 42 civil partnership ceremonies for 2014.

Robert Fisher from the council’s registration service said: “It’s fantastic that we have already taken several bookings for same sex couples wishing to get married after March.

““However, we do understand that it’s disappointing for some couples who are already in a civil partnership.

“We’ve had lots of interest and are eagerly awaiting more information.

“We look forward to getting a firm date when all same sex marriages can take place.”
