Death crash victim Shaun ‘lived for his car’

Shaun Keith Walker of Langford Road Mansfield lost his life after a two car collision on Brick Kiln Lane on Sunday morning.

Shaun, 23 was pronounced dead at the scene after his Ford Focus was in collision with a Toyota Yaris at the Abbott Road and Westfield Lane junction.

The four occupants of the Yaris - one of which was a child - were taken to hospital and an air ambulance was used following the crash shortly after 10am.

Speaking to Chad on Tuesday, his father Len Walker, 52 said: “We are all devastated by what has happened - it has not really sunk in yet.

“He was a popular lad with loads of friends. He had all his life in front of him.”

Shaun, a car mechanic at Mansfield Engine Centre was a keen car enthusiast , who took his Ford Focus to car meets around the country.

He is survived by his two brothers Richard 28 and Carl 21.

His dad added: “Shaun lived for his cars - he has loved doing them up with a group of mates since he was young.

“He loved his job and went straight into an apprenticeship when he was 16 at Mansfield Engine Centre.

“He had been cleaning up for them since he was 14.

“He was the first apprentice they ever had.”

He said the former Queen Elizabeth School pupil Shaun was also a keen roller blader.

It is understood he had been driving out on a shopping trip on the morning of the tragedy.

Mr Walker said: “We found out about the crash later that afternoon.

The police have been very good and told us as much as they could.”

Vinny Lawson a partner at Mansfield Engine Centre, paid tribute to Shaun on behalf of everyone who works there. He said: “We are just devastated - he was part of the family and a fully trained mechanic.

“We were friends in and out of work.”

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) were unable to give the age or gender of casualties involved in the crash. There had been four patients in total, one a child.

One patient was taken to Nottingham QMC by Air Ambulance, two by ambulance. The child was taken to King’s Mill Hospital.

They said a first-aider from another ambulance service had been at the scene by chance and gave CPR to one of the casualties.

A spokesman for EMAS said: “This was a particularly demanding incident and we responded with several resources including rapid response vehicles, double crew ambulances, members of our specialist Hazardous Area Response Team and the Air ambulance.

“All staff provided the best possible clinical care for the casualties at the scene and during the journey to hospital and we are proud of the highly professional way they dealt with all the patients involved as well as the challenging circumstances they were presented with. Sadly, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Nottinghamshire Police would only say the four occupants of the Yaris had been taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where their injuries were not life threatening.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call 101, quoting incident 332 of 8 November.

Officers were appealing for the occupants of a silver Vauxhall Astra, believed to be three door coupe, who may have witnessed the accident to call them.
