Day of remembrance for our fallen heroes

Remembrance Sunday is this weekend and will be particularly poignant as it falls on the centenary of the First World War.

A number of events are planned in Mansfield and Ashfield in commemoration of the sacrifice our servicemen and women have made in armed conflicts since its outbreak.

At 9.50am a parade will assemble at Mansfield Civic Centre War Memorial for a brief ceremony at 10am, which will include wreath laying, followed by a remembrance service at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church at 10.55am.

Following the service, the parade will return to the Civic Centre’s council chamber for refreshments.

At Rainworth, the parade will gather at the Village Hall on Kirklington Road at 10.15am and move on to St Jude’s on Southwell Road for the Remembrance Service at 10.45am.

There will be a wreath-laying at Bellamy Road Community Centre at 10.30am followed by a service.

At Mansfield Woodhouse, the parade will assemble in Morrisons’ car park at 10.15am before moving off at 10.30am to the cenotaph.

Wreaths will be laid At 11am and there will be an act of homage. A service will follow at St Edmund’s Parish Church. There will then be a further wreath-laying ceremony at Pleasley Vale Memorial.

Warsop’s parade will assemble at Carr Lane Ex-Serviceman’s Club at 10am and move off at 10.15am. There will be an Act of Homage at 11am and a service at the War Memorial.

The Forest Town parade will assemble at the Welfare car park at 10.05am for a 10.30am march which culminates at St Alban’s Church.

Light refreshments will be served at the Welfare afterwards.

At Nottingham Road Cemetery there will be an act of homage at 10.45am at the cemetery chapel. This will then be followed by laying of wreaths at the nearby war memorial.

A 10am service will be held at Huthwaite’s All Saints Church followed by an 11am service and wreath laying at the cenotaph

Ironville’s service will be held at 10.15am, while a 10.30am service will be held at Jacksdale Memorial, Main Street.

At 9.45am a service commences at Kirkby’s St Thomas’ Church, Kingsway, followed by a 10.55am service and wreath laying at the war memorial.

In Selston a 9.45am service will be held at the memorial.

There will be a 10.30am service at All Saints Church, Stanton Hill, a 10.30am Service at St Andrew’s Church, Skegby, and a 6.30pm Service at St Katherine’s Church, Teversal.

Sutton will see a 9.25am parade assembling at Portland Square followed by a 9.50am service at St Mary’s Church.

At 11am the Last Post will be played, followed by a two-minute silence and wreath laying at the cenotaph.

In Hucknall, a 10.20am Parade assembles at Market Place followed by an 11am service and wreath laying at Cenotaph, Titchfield Park.
