David Hallam faced tough competition from 11 other drivers who were shortlisted for the challenge as recognition for their efforts to help improve store service and efficiency.

They were put through their paces in a series of practical and theory tests at the grand final, hosted by Scania, at a test track at Bruntingthorpe, Leceistershire, where David was announced as the overall winner.

The 42-year-old, who has worked at The Co-operative for 10 years, picked up a trophy and won a VIP visit to Scania’s headquarters in Sweden.

David, a driver at the Primary and Commercial Division of The Co-operative’s Logistics Service, said: “The standard of those competing on the day was extremely high and I was shocked and surprised to finish ahead of the pack, but also delighted to win.”

The competition was open to more than 1,200 drivers employed by The Co-operative Food’s distribution operation, and nominations were shortlisted by The Co-operative Food’s fleet panel, based on accident records, attendance, low tachograph errors, customer feedback and testimonials. Ken Thompson, national fleet manager, added: “David is an outstanding employee and a great ambassador for The Co-operative.”
