D-Day veteran Eric dies at 92

Born on Queen Street, Sutton, and a lifelong local resident, Eric Round's last job was as an NCB medical room assistant at Teversal Colliery, retiring 35 years ago.

He had participated in the D-Day Landings, as an 18-year-old in 1944, as crew on a landing craft.

His interests included football and cricket (played for many local teams), was a referee/referee instructor and assessor.

He was also a member of the Royal British Legion, holding many key responsibilities and was National Secretary of the Landing Craft Association.

He liked bowls, was a motorcycle trials rider with Sutton Falcons in his younger years and was interested in natural history.

Mr Round, who passed away at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, on December 25, 2018, leaves his wife Millicent, sons James Kenneth, Christopher Eric and Peter Reginald, three grandchildren, four step grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His funeral service took place at St Mary’s Church, Sutton.
