Crumbling old pub will be turned into bedsits

The Ye Olde Jug & Glass Inn on Edwinstowe’s High Street has been vacant for almost seven years and has fallen into disrepair through vandalism and inclement weather.

Applicants Glyn Beech and Julie Taplin, from Retford, have submitted plans for converting the building into 16 single-person units - five flats and 11 bedsits.

As part of their application, they say the conversion will “bring back into good use an important building at the heart of Edwinstowe”.

They say the front of the building adds to the character of the street scene and its features and windows will be repaired and restored.

The pub closed in 2009 and despite attempts to market it as an ongoing business, little interest was shown from outside investors.

A lack of trade originally forced its closure, caused by two other pubs nearby, both of which are within walking distance of the village centre.

As part of the applicants’ statement, it reads: “These two public houses now appear to serve the community and both appear well used and viable.

“Given the length of time this public house has been closed, it is obvious that it is now no longer required to fulfil any community requirements.”

Each dwelling will also come with one car parking space, and access will be improved off East Lane.

Electric gates will also be installed to protect vehicles to the rear of the building.
