Woman in serious condition in hospital after Sutton street attack

A woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being knocked unconscious in a shocking single-punch street attack in Sutton.

Police say a man punched her in the face and knocked her to the ground on Coxmoor Road shortly after 4.20pm on Tuesday.

The man left the scene before officers arrived and the woman made her way home where she was offered medical assistance.

Officers searched the area and spoke to people who were around at the time before arresting a 40-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He remains in custody.

However, the woman’s condition later deteriorated and she went to King’s Mill Hospital where she is currently being treated for her injuries and remains in a serious but not life-threatening condition.

Det Sgt Matt Scott, investigating the incident, said: "A woman has been left in a serious condition in hospital and we are very keen to establish the circumstances around what happened.

"This type of incident and this behaviour is taken extremely seriously. A single punch to the face can have catastrophic consequences and we will thoroughly investigate wherever this type of incident has been reported to us.

"We would like to reassure people that we do believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no further risk to the public. A man has been arrested and officers are continuing their enquiries.

"There are a number of items which we are asking people in the area to look out for, which are believed to have been discarded. These are a green baseball cap, a khaki jacket, a grey t-shirt, blue jeans and also blue and white trainers. If anyone does see anything of this description which looks like it has been discarded, please do get in touch.”
