Woman arrested for arson after blaze forces Sutton families to flee homes

A woman has been arrested for arson after a fire which led to a number of Sutton flats being evacuated.

A blaze started in a property at Leamington Hall Flats, Stuart Street, Sutton, at 6.37pm yesterday (Friday, July 24).

Detective Sergeant Dave Prest, who is leading the investigation, said: "Police and firefighters were called to the scene and a number of flats were evacuated. Damage was caused to some of the flats but all residents were accounted for and thankfully no one was seriously hurt.

"Ashfield District Council were also called to the scene to arrange for alternative accommodation for displaced residents.

"A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent in connection with the incident. She has also received treatment at King's Mill Hospital for smoke inhalation."
