Warsop man punched off-duty police officer in unprovoked pub attack

A Warsop man punched an off-duty police officer in an unprovoked attack after they had both been playing pool as part of a group in a local pub.

Kane Matthew Quibell was in the Crate and Grapes public house on January 12 this year when the incident happened, which left the officer with facial injuries, Nottingham Magistrates’ Court was told on Friday, October 23.

Quibell, 28, of Watson Street, Market Warsop, had been out all day drinking with friends, said Neil Hollett, prosecuting.

Things had initially been good natured, but the mood had soured and the officer was assaulted after he had moved to a different part of the pub, the court heard.

“They had been playing killer pool and it was getting a bit rowdy,” Mr Hollett said. “The group knew that the complainant was a police officer who attends all of Lincoln City’s football matches.

“The complainant moved to another area but someone shouted ‘oink, oink, piggy lover’.

“There was another issue in the pub and the officer went to assist someone who was on the floor when he felt a sharp pain to his head and he was later told that it was the defendant who had assaulted him.

“Police obtained CCTV footage which clearly shows the complainant punching the officer.

Quibell admitted assault when he appeared before the court.

Mitigating, Abby Edwards said that he was a hard-working man of previous good character

“He had been out for most of the day drinking and socialising with his friends,” she said.

Quibell was fined £250 and ordered to pay £100 in compensation, £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
