Teenager charged with robbery at Kirkby stores allegedly used machete

A 19 year old man will appear in court today charged with attempted robbery after raids at Kirkby stores on Friday and Sunday.

Staff at two Kirkby stores were put through a terrifying ordeal when the teenager allegedly held them at knifepoint.

Connor Lee, 19, of Southwell Close, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, is charged with one count of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place. He is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court today (Monday 3 August 2020).

The robbery charge relates to a report of a suspect entering a store in Victoria Street yesterday (Sunday 2 August 2020) allegedly armed with a machete.

It is alleged the suspect demanded cash and alcohol before leaving the store.

When police arrested and searched the suspect it's alleged that he had a machete hidden down his trousers.

The attempted robbery charges relate to a report of a suspect entering a store in Laurel Grove on 31 July 2020 allegedly armed with a machete and demanding cash from the till.

Detective Sergeant Jamie Moore, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "These were very frightening experiences for the shop workers involved.

Thankfully they were uninjured but the alleged incidents left them extremely shaken and upset.

"I hope this arrest and charge shows how committed Nottinghamshire Police is to using all the resources at its disposal to identify those those suspected of carrying weapons and bring them before the courts to face justice."
