Sutton woman who glassed female pub-goer was later knocked out by her victim

A Sutton woman who glassed a female pub-goer in the mouth after making comments about her boyfriend’s teeth was later knocked unconscious by her victim, a court has heard.

Jade Thorpe had been arguing with her victim’s partner in the smoking area of the Nag’s Head, on Low Street on June 30 last year, said Lucy Woodcock, prosecuting.

When the woman got involved, Thorpe, aged 25, said: “Who the f*** are you?” before smashing a glass into the woman’s face, causing a large laceration to her lip.

She was ejected from the pub and her victim punched her outside and knocked her unconscious.

Ian Pridham, mitigating, said Thorpe, of previous good character, “made a comment to her friend about the man's teeth, saying she wished she had the money to afford teeth like that.”

"He took exception,” said Mr Pridham. “He is a very large gentleman. He called her a name and it got heated. There was pushing and shoving. Everyone got involved and restrained the gentleman."

He said Thorpe was carrying the glass she had been drinking from when she went to leave the smoking area.

"The assault appears to be a spur of the moment thing,” he said. “She was assaulted outside and rendered unconscious.”

It isn’t known if Thorpe’s victim faces a related assault charge, the court heard.

Mr Pridham said Thorpe has been off work since January following a workplace injury and is currently applying for benefits.

“She accepts she has had an issue with alcohol in the past,” he said.

Thorpe, of Low Street, Sutton, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm when she appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe told her: “Some would say you suffered summary justice on the night you were knocked out.

"I accept you have never been in trouble before. I also accept that you probably wish you could wind the clock back and walk away from this incident. There was one cause to this incident - alcohol. If you need help you know where you can get it. This is an assault with a weapon on licensed premises.”

He sentenced her to 26 weeks, suspended for 18 months, and ordered her to pay £85 costs, a £154 surcharge, and £200 compensation.
