A SUTTON man has been handed a community order after he stole a tracksuit from a sports shop.
Shane Chapman (31), of Stoneyford Road, was given a 12-month community order with supervision by Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
He will also have to undergo a thinking skills programme to help with his gambling and cannabis use.
Magistrates were told that Chapman had gone to Sports World on Station Street in Mansfield on 12th September.
The manager of the store watched him go into the changing rooms with a blue tracksuit, worth £35.
But when he came out he no longer had the tracksuit.
The manager asked Chapman to stop but he ran away. He was later detained by police and the tracksuit was found in his bag.
Chapman’s solicitor told the court that he had taken the tracksuit into the changing room and when he saw that it had no security tag on it, he took it.
In sentencing him, District Judge Diane Baker praised Chapman for coming off hard drugs after a Class A test came back negative.
But she said he needed to address his issues surrounding cannabis and alcohol.
She said: “It is a deliberate theft - when you went in you intended to take it.
“It’s a nonsense to say you only did it once you got inside.”
He was warned that if he breached the order he could go to jail and was also ordered to pay £85 court costs.
