Sutton man jailed after attacking woman with a knife

Jake Hobson was sentenced to 20 weeks after pleading guilty to common assault to a domestic violence victim, possession of cannabis and resisting a constable in execution of their duties.

He was also sentenced for six shop thefts in November and December 2019 where alcohol was stolen a number of times from Morrisons in Newark.

The charges relate to an incident in Penn Street, at around 1am on Tuesday (21 April 2020) following a report of an assault.

Mansfield Magistrates Court heard he brandished a knife at a woman, threatened her and cut her inner thigh.

Hobson was found with a lock knife in his pocket when officers searched him.

A small amount of cannabis was also found in his shoe when he was searched again in custody.

The victim suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Hobson was also verbally abusive to officers when he was being arrested and in custody.

Detective Sergeant Hannah Frame, who led the investigation, said: "We are pleased with the result from the court. The force takes domestic assaults very seriously.

"He was also extremely abusive to the officers upon arrest and whilst in custody, which is unacceptable, especially in the current climate.

"The sentence will hopefully give confidence to those who are experiencing domestic violence to seek help from the police.

“Like we have seen around the world, it is likely that during the Coronavirus pandemic, we are going to see a rise in the number of cases of domestic abuse.

“While this is an unfortunate reality of families being in their households more, Nottinghamshire Police is committed to protecting people throughout this time and I want anyone who is in a difficult situation to know we are here for them.

“You are not alone in this and help is always available. Whether it be through us, Women’s Aid or any service you access, we can help you.

“Our stance is business as usual and that is no different when it comes to abuse.”

He was sentenced at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on April 22.
