Sutton drink-driver’s short-lived escape bid from cops ended with collision

A banned drink-driver from Sutton held his hands up when his short-lived escape bid from police ended in a minor collision, a court has heard.

Craig Tinegate accelerated when officers began following his white Ford transit van because he was speeding on Sleaford Road, Newark, on November 21, last year, said Sarah Angus, prosecuting.

But when he turned into Esther Varney Place he made contact with a parked vehicle which was blocking the way.

He was sitting in the driver's seat with his hands up and told officers he'd drunk three cans of lager, Ms Angus added.

A breath test revealed he had 46 microgrammes of alcohol when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The court heard has nine previous convictions for 13 offences and was banned for 20 months in October 2024 for drink driving.

Neil Taylor, mitigating, said Tinegate, who works in construction, deserved full credit for his early guilty plea.

"He is making significant strides to reduce his alcohol consumption," he said.

"He was driving his neighbour's work van following an argument with his partner and acknowledges it was a stupid decision."

Tinegate, aged 32, of Brandreth Avenue, Sutton, admitted drink driving, and driving without insurance or a licence, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on December 9.

On Thursday he was disqualified from driving for 38 months. A rehabilitation course could reduce the ban by 25 per cent if he completes it by May 2028.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, with 20 rehabilitation days and 150 hours of unpaid work.
