Sutton boy racer ‘completely obliterated’ parked car and tried to flee with pal

A banned boy racer who “completely obliterated” a parked car after losing control of his uninsured Audi in Kirkby tried to flee the scene in a friend’s vehicle, a court has heard.

A motorist on Southwell Lane realised they would be hit if they didn’t sweve and pulled into a gap before Bradley Grimsley drove past “ridiculously and aggressively fast” with “the engine screaming.”

Grimsley, aged 22, was being followed by a blue 4x4 “as if they were racing”, just before midday on June 26, said prosecutor Freddie Sail.

Another witness saw the red Audi A3 “going way too fast” and lurch forward as Grimsley braked, skidding sideways across the road and “completely obliterating” a parked car before shunting it into two more vehicles.

Grimsley ran to the blue 4x4 and offered money to be driven away, said Mr Sail.

He was driven ten yards down the road before the 4x4 stopped and reversed back.

Grimsley retrieved "a load of items" from the crashed Audi and then ran away, but he was identified from CCTV.

The owner of the car he hit said it was a write-off and she felt “awful” afterwards and “stressed by the hassle.”

The court heard Grimsley was disqualified in February for drug driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

His defence solicitor said: “Clearly he has made a monumental error in judgement. It is a decision he deeply regrets. He is thankful no one was injured.”

She said Grimsley was “in a really bad place at the time” after breaking up with his partner and becoming homeless.

He has been diagnosed with depression, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), she said, but despite those challenges and a "rough" upbringing he has sought professional help for his mental health, secured supported accommodation, and hopes to gain work as a landscape gardener.

Grimsley, of Chatsworth Street, Sutton, admitted driving while disqualified, without insurance, without due care and attention and failing to stop after an accident, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court on August 29.

On Tuesday, he received a 16 week sentence, suspended for 12 months, with 16 rehabilitation days.

He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £154 surcharge. He was banned for 23 months, including five months from the previous disqualification.
