police are warning residents against letting strangers into their homes, following a spate of distraction burglaries.
Burglars posing as handymen and representatives from utilities companies have been targeting the aged community and making off with hundreds of pounds in cash and jewellery.
In the last two months there have been 14 incidents, all on elderly homeowners and all by bogus callers.
Incidents locally have been reported in Selston, Mansfield and Warsop.
There have also been instances in which the thieves have claimed to be selling raffle tickets for charity, offered to clear guttering and even asking to retrieve a ball from the back garden.
In most cases, one man has distracted their victim while another searches the house. Most of the thieves have distinctive accents, such as Irish or Liverpudlian.
Police are urging residents to check who is calling before opening the door.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
