Shirebrook residents tell of shock as murder probe launched after death of 'wonderful' man

Residents in Shirebrook have told of their shock after a murder probe was launched following the discovery of a man’s body near their homes.

Officers were called to an allotment off Prospect Drive at around 10am on Sunday and found the body.

According to Derbyshire Constabulary, the victim suffered injuries that would suggest he had been assaulted.

The force is now appealing for anyone who heard ‘any noise or disturbance’ in the Prospect Drive area between Saturday night and Sunday morning to come forward.

Although the man has been named locally, his identity has not yet been confirmed by police and enquiries are ongoing to trace his family.

In Shirebrook this morning, a man - who did not want to be named - said: “Everyone’s in shock.

“He was a top bloke, a wonderful person - he’d help anybody.

“He didn’t deserve this.

“I can’t believe what’s happened to him.”

Another resident added: “It’s very sad.

“You don’t expect this to happen around here.”

Detective Inspector Chris Marriott, the senior investigating officer, said: “We are appealing to anyone who may have heard any noise or disturbance between 10.30pm on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday around the Prospect Drive area to contact us.

“We would also like anyone who lives in the area who might have CCTV or dash cam footage to contact us.”
