Quick-thinking member of the public helps police catch Nottinghamshire burglary suspect

Police have praised a brave member of the public who chased after a suspected burglar in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to a property on Stoneyford Road shortly before 2am on August 2. It was reported that a suspect had entered an 81-year-old woman's home before he was disturbed and was then chased by a neighbouring resident.

Officers swiftly responded to the call and arrested a 43-year-old man nearby on suspicion of burglary. He remains in police custody.

Detective Constable Louise Foster said: "While we would not actively encourage members of the public to do anything that puts them in harm’s way, I'd like to praise the resident who alerted us and chased after the suspect.

"By reacting quickly and passing on timely information to police, he helped us detain a suspected burglar who is now being questioned in relation to this incident.

"This is another example of how the public are our eyes and ears and how, by working together, we can continue to tackle and reduce burglary in our communities.
