Police found drugs on Nottinghamshire man's glove box after they'd impounded his car

A Nottinghamshire man admitted possessing cannabis after police discovered a quantity of the drug in the glove compartment of his car after it had been impounded.

Steven Alan Binch was spotted by officers standing next to his car in Bourne Avenue, Kirkby, on June 1 last year, Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Thursday, January 23.

They noticed that he was unsteady on his feet and conducted a roadside breath test, which proved negative, and he told them he had been trying to change a car tyre which had burst when he clipped a kerb, said Robert Carr, prosecuting.

“The car was confiscated, and about three days later an officer went to the facility where impounded cars are kept and found a quantity of cannabis in the glove box. He was interviewed and admitted buying it for the sum of about £180, but would not say who he bought it from.”

Binch, 38, of Lancaster Road, Hucknall admitted possession of a Class B drug when he appeared before the court.

Mitigating, Deborah Bell said: “He clipped a kerb and burst one of his tyres - he’s someone who has great difficulty with his mobility for a number of reasons. After officers discovered the cannabis, he wasn’t interviewed about it until September and he has been out of trouble for a significant length of time.”

Binch was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
