Police were initially called to Whittaker Road, Rainworth, after homeowners discovered a man on their landing.

Believing they could be hiding in gardens in Cambridge Road, police made their way to the back of those properties and heard someone hurdling fences as they approached.

The officers shone their torches into the darkness and started climbing over fences and through thick brambles until they saw someone standing in a garden, in nearby Woodpecker Drive.

The 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Sergeant Nathan Whitehead, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "The response officers involved in this incident deserve great credit for tracking down this suspect as quickly as they did.

"Despite it being pitch black and them having to navigate thick undergrowth while getting to the individual through gardens, they managed to do so and make this arrest.

"Discovering someone they didn't know in their house in the middle of the night must've been a very alarming experience for the homeowners, but they showed great bravery in chasing them out and alerting the police.

"We hope the speed with which our officers attended this incident and identified a suspect provides both the victims and the wider public with some reassurance."
